Certificate II Sport and Recreation

What does the course entail?

The Certificate II Sport and Recreation course provides students with the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and knowledge appropriate to the Sport and Recreation industry. Likely functions for someone with this qualification can include providing the provision of sport and recreation programs, grounds and facilities maintenance, retail and customer service assistance, administrative assistance in locations such as a fitness centre, outdoor sporting grounds or complexes or aquatic centres. Those enrolled in the course also gain employability skills particular to communication, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self-management and technology integration.

What will be covered in this course?

Practical topics covered include (Year 11 is the first year of the two year course):
  • Triathlon (NOTE: Heavy Marine Focus)
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Australian Rules Football

Practical topics, as a guide, may include (Year 12 is the second year of the two year course):
  • Surfing/Bronze Medallion (NOTE: Heavy Marine Focus)
  • Tenpin bowling
  • Assisting with activity sessions (coaching)
  • Equipment preparation & maintenance
  • Event planning & co-ordination (Outdoor Recreation activities)
  • Mountain Biking

As part of the training package students also have the opportunity to complete an Apply First Aid certificate (HLTAID0011 Provide first aid), Bronze Medallion, and Sports Medicine Australia accredited Sports Taping certificates. Additional off campus industry visits will be organised relating to these units such as to Marine Rescue at Point Peron, Optus Stadium tour and Disability Sports Association.

UOC 7 - HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety (Fire Extinguisher Training)
UOC 8 - HLTAID003 Provide first aid (Practical training incursion)
UOC 9 - SISXFAC006 Maintain activity equipment
UOC 10 - SISOCYT002 Ride bicycles on roads and pathways, easy conditions

EXPECTATIONS
  • Students will need to be available for full school events where they will complete some units of competency. Events include Inter-School Carnivals, College Carnivals, Inter-School Sporting fixtures, team social functions and other curriculum based sporting events and primary school visits.
  • ALL units of competency must be achieved to the competency standard in order to achieve the full qualification - Certificate II Sport and Recreation (SIS20122)
  • Part of this course has a marine focus, it is a requirement of the course that ALL students complete a practical skills test to demonstrate their competency in the water.
  • There is no programmed homework for this subject. Although, if students fall behind or miss programmed classwork it is an expectation that this is completed out of class time.
