Curtin Uniready

CURTIN UNIREADY PROGRAM

The Curtin UniReady program is designed to develop independent learning skills and prepare students for the academic rigors of university. At Kolbe Catholic College, students may study this program alongside their other WACE and Certificate courses. Students select this course during Yr11 subject selections and complete it in Year 12. Curtin UniReady is also an Endorsed Program recognised by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

HOW DOES UNIREADY DIFFER FROM AN ATAR PATHWAY?

An ATAR pathway requires students to take a minimum of four ATAR courses. The final scores from these courses (including the external WACE exam) result in an ATAR which allows direct entry into a university course. A minimum ATAR of 70 is required to attend Murdoch, ECU and Curtin undergraduate courses (which lead to a degree), and 75 for UWA. The primary focus is on developing transferable skills that are required to succeed at university. With the Curtin UniReady course students are able to study all general subjects. There is no need to complete any ATAR subjects.

HOW DOES UNIREADY RUN AT KOLBE?

Students study four core units over the 2 semesters covering the following topics
  • Fundamentals of Academic Writing
  • Foundations of Communication
  • Introduction to Humanities
  • Introduction to Health Sciences
Curtin University will manage and run the course and students will be treated as university students. A teacher from Kolbe Catholic College will be delivering the units under the supervision and guidance of Curtin University and each topic will be assessed through a range of different assessments and a final exam. All assessments will be carried out at Kolbe Catholic College and marked by your child’s teacher at the College. Curtin University will write and moderate all assessments for each unit.

The course is delivered in Year 12 run as a normal class on the timetable.

HOW DOES UNIREADY HELP STUDENTS GET IN TO UNIVERSITY?

Successful completion of UniReady (which consists of passing all four units) gives the students a “notional” ATAR score. As the score is not calculated by TISC, it is not an ATAR score as such; rather it is recognised by Curtin as meeting the minimum entry requirements. Once the student has passed all four units, they can have direct entry into a number of select courses where the entry requirement is an ATAR of 70. UniReady leads directly into a number of health, science, humanities, education and business courses. The course can also be used as part of a pathway into health, science and engineering courses that have certain pre-requisites. View the list of courses and possible pathways at curtin.edu.au/uniready. It is critical that students research their pathway to Curtin university. The courses run at Kolbe may not lead directly into some courses at Curtin. Investigate thoroughly and do not assume entry through the UniReady program into all Curtin courses.

HOW DOES MY CHILD APPLY?

If students are recommended the subject during Yr 12 subject selection they can choose to do Curtin UniReady and choose it as they would any other subject. Please note students doing UniReady at school are not allowed to take more than 1 ATAR subject. We encourage students to do general subjects.

HOW MUCH WILL UNIREADY COST?

The cost of the course will be $375 for each student who wishes to participate in the course. This is a one off, non-refundable payment for the one year course.
