What does the course entail?

The Mathematics Essential General course focuses on enabling students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. In this course, reasoning includes critically interpreting and analysing information represented through graphs, tables and other statistical representations. The ability to transfer mathematical skills between contexts is a vital part of learning in this course. The Mathematics Essential General course provides students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning and community settings. This course provides the opportunity for students to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training.

What will be covered in this course?

YEAR 11
UNITS 1 & 2

Unit 1
This unit includes the following four topics:
  • Basic calculations, percentages and rates
  • Using formulas for practical purposes
  • Measurement
  • Graphs

Unit 2
This unit includes the following four topics:
  • Representing and comparing data
  • Percentages
  • Rates and ratios
  • Time and motion

Assessment Structure
The types of assessments encountered in the Mathematics Essential General course are response, practical applications tasks and statistical investigation process tasks (in Unit 2 only).

YEAR 12
UNITS 3 & 4

Unit 3
This unit includes the following four topics:
  • Measurement
  • Scales, plans and models
  • Graphs in practical situations
  • Data collection

Unit 4
This unit includes the following three topics:
  • Probability and relative frequencies
  • Earth geometry and time zones
  • Loans and compound interest

Assessment Structure
The types of assessments encountered in the Mathematics Essential General course are response, practical applications tasks, statistical investigation process tasks and an externally set task.
