Mathematics Foundation

What does the course entail?

Mathematics Foundation is a course which focuses on building the capacity, confidence and disposition to use mathematics to meet the numeracy standard for the WACE. It provides students with the knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems across a range of contexts, including personal, community and workplace/employment. The course focuses on functional numeracy embedded in familiar and meaningful contexts which are relevant to young adults. This course provides the opportunity for students to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training.

What will be covered in this course?

YEAR 11
UNITS 1 & 2

Unit 1
Contains the five content areas:
  • Whole numbers and money
  • Addition and subtraction with whole numbers and money
  • Length, mass and capacity
  • Time
  • Data, graphs and tables

Unit 2
Contains the five content areas:
  • Understanding fractions and decimals
  • Multiplication and division with whole numbers and money
  • Metric relationships
  • Perimeter, area and volume
  • The probability of everyday events

Assessment Structure
The types of assessments encountered in the Mathematics Foundation course are Response and Practical Applications Tasks.

YEAR 12
UNITS 3 & 4

Unit 3
This unit includes the five content areas:
  • The four operations: Whole numbers and money
  • Percentages linked with fractions and decimals
  • The four operations: Fractions and decimals
  • Location, time and temperature
  • Space and design

Unit 4
Contains the three content areas:
  • Rates and ratios
  • Statistics and probability
  • Application of the mathematical thinking process

Assessment Structure
The types of assessments encountered in the Mathematics Foundation course are Response, Practical Applications Tasks and an externally set task.
