Physics ATAR

What does the course entail?

Physics is a fundamental science that endeavours to explain all the natural phenomena that occur in the universe. Its power lies in the use of a comparatively small number of assumptions, models, laws and theories to explain a wide range of phenomena, from the incredibly small to the incredibly large. Physics has helped to unlock the mysteries of the universe and provides the foundation of understanding upon which modern technologies and all other sciences are based.
Studying physics will enable students to become citizens who are better informed about the world around them and who have the critical skills to evaluate and make evidence-based decisions about current scientific issues. The Physics ATAR course will also provide a foundation in physics knowledge, understanding and skills for those students who wish to pursue tertiary study in science, engineering, medicine and technology.

"The Adventure World excursion applied the concepts we learned in the classroom to an engaging and educational out-of-classroom experience. The fun and excitement we experienced was balanced by a formative assessment that made us think about physics working in the world around us."

What will be covered in this course?

YEAR 11
UNITS 1 & 2

Students will study two units, with each unit broken into the topics:
  • Heating Processes
  • Ionising radiation and nuclear reactions
  • Electrical circuits
  • Linear motion and force
  • Waves

Assessment Structure
Students will be assessed using the following assessment types:
  • 40% Exams
  • 30% Test
  • 30% Experiment/Investigation/Evaluation Analysis

Expectations
Students will be required to study, as well as complete homework and research tasks out of class time. Past students have found this load to be approximately 30 minutes per night.
Studying multiple science courses in Year 11
Please note that while students may receive a recommendation for all four ATAR sciences, it is only with the approval of the HOLA that students may undertake more than two science courses.

YEAR 12
UNITS 3 & 4

Students will study two units, with each unit broken into the topics:
  • Gravity and motion
  • Electromagnetism
  • Wave particle duality and quantum theory
  • Special relativity

Assessment Structure
Students will be assessed using the following assessment types:
  • 50% Exams
  • 30% Test
  • 20% Experiment/Investigation/Evaluation Analysis

Expectations
Students will be required to study, as well as complete homework and research tasks out of class time. Past students have found this load to be approximately 6 hours per week.
Studying multiple science courses in Year 12
