Psychology ATAR

What does the course entail?

Psychology is the scientific study of how people think, feel and act. It aims to answer important questions such as what factors influence human development. While there are other disciplines that overlay with psychology's main aim to understand humans, psychology is rigorous in its use of these scientific methods. This allows for systematic exploration into the complexities of human behaviour based on evidence gathered through planned investigations.
The Psychology course is designed to integrate the understanding of scientific principles, the acquisition of psychological knowledge and the application of both in an enjoyable and contemporary way. The study of psychology is highly relevant to further students in the health professions; education, human resources, social sciences, sales, media and marketing and management.

What will be covered in this course?

YEAR 11
UNITS 1 & 2

In this course, you’ll explore how and why people think, feel and behave the way they do. You’ll learn about topics like emotions, memory, decision-making, and how the brain influences your actions.
There’s a strong focus on real-life relevance, especially during adolescence, including relationships, development, and social behaviour.
You’ll apply key psychological ideas to everyday situations and build skills in analysing information, communicating ideas, and designing your own investigations using scientific methods.

Assessment Structure
Students will be assessed using the following assessment types:
  • 30% Science inquiry
  • 40% Response
  • 30% Exam

Expectations
Students will be required to study, as well as complete homework and research tasks out of class time. We would recommend that students spend approximately 30 minutes per night on Psychology.

Studying multiple science courses in Year 11
Please note that while students may receive a recommendation for all four ATAR sciences, it is only with the approval of the HOLA that students may undertake more than two science courses.

YEAR 12
UNITS 3 & 4

In this unit, you’ll learn how memory works—how we take in information, what we pay attention to, and why we sometimes forget things. You’ll explore memory models, how the brain is involved, and what affects how well we remember.
You’ll also look at how people learn, including learning through association, rewards and consequences, and by observing others. You’ll apply these ideas to real-life situations, like building good habits or changing behaviour.
The unit also focuses on motivation and wellbeing—what drives you and how it impacts how you feel. You’ll explore the role of stress and sleep, and learn practical, evidence-based strategies to manage stress, improve sleep, and support your overall wellbeing.
